Riyadh Airport Attacks Kill Three as Airlines Extend Flight Disruption

Saudi authorities said on October 9 that attacks the previous day on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport had killed three people and injured several others. The confirmation added a human toll to a disruption already affecting passengers across a number of international routes.

Reuters reported that a Saudia aircraft was damaged and that the airline identified one of the dead as an employee. Yemen’s Houthi movement continued threats against Saudi aviation. The Saudi-led coalition said it had destroyed missile-launch platforms and would respond to attacks on civilians. These statements describe the positions of the parties to the conflict; operational claims should remain attributed.

Airport operations and airline schedules diverged

Saudi civil aviation authorities said traffic at Riyadh had resumed, and Reuters reported a gradual return of flights alongside continuing cancellations and delays. This is an important distinction for travellers: an airport can be operating while a particular airline still suspends its service.

The Indian Express reported that Air India and Akasa Air had cancelled Riyadh services through October 10, while IndiGo’s announced cancellation period ran through October 9. Lufthansa Group’s suspension extended through October 16. An Air India flight from Delhi had turned back on October 8. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh shared notices about the disruption.

Those dates describe the announcements available for this edition. They are not a promise that every flight will restart immediately afterwards. Security assessments, aircraft positioning and revised schedules can leave an individual booking affected after the headline suspension period ends.

Why a reopened airport is only one part of the picture

An airport’s ability to receive aircraft and an airline’s decision to dispatch them answer different questions. Passengers need the status of their own flight, including its date and flight number, rather than a general statement that traffic has resumed. A connecting trip also requires checking the onward sector; confirmation of the first flight does not establish that the entire journey remains intact.

The verified reporting showed an evolving aviation situation, not a uniform shutdown across every route. It would therefore be misleading to turn a cancellation affecting Riyadh into a blanket claim about all travel through the Gulf. Each service needs its own confirmation.

Practical checks for affected passengers

Before leaving for the airport, consult the operating airline’s latest message and flight-status page. Keep the booking reference, original itinerary and cancellation notice together. Ask the airline or booking agent what rebooking or refund options apply to that reservation, and whether a changed connection affects the rest of the ticket.

Avoid treating a social-media clip as a live operational update unless its time and location are verified. This article records the position known by the October 9 cutoff; travellers making decisions later should use newer official notices. The key development is that resumed airport activity coexisted with continuing airline restrictions after a deadly attack.
