Floodwater Safety: Why a Familiar Road Can Become Dangerous

A flooded road can conceal damage, moving water and electrical hazards even when it is a route you use every day. Familiarity with the street cannot tell you what is beneath the surface or whether it remains safe to cross. The US National Weather Service advises people never to walk or drive into floodwater. Its guidance warns that about 15 centimetres of fast-moving water can knock an adult over, while roughly 30 centimetres of rushing water can carry away many cars. Larger vehicles are also vulnerable. These figures illustrate the danger; they are not safe-depth limits for testing a crossing. Water conditions, vehicles and road surfaces vary. A barrier may mark a washed-out road or another hazard that is invisible from where you are standing. Going around it removes a protection put in place for road users. Prepare before a route is cut off The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends planning an evacuation route and agreeing on a family contact in case people become ...

Iran Says Hormuz Reopening Proposal Remains Open as Talks Stall

Iran’s foreign minister said on October 18 that Tehran’s proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz remained available to the United States. The statement described an offer still under discussion, rather than an agreement to restore shipping. Reuters reported that Abbas Araqchi made the remarks in Baghdad, where he was attending an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation meeting. Iran had submitted its proposal in mid-September after an interim ceasefire collapsed and was reviewing American comments. The demands included ending restrictions on Iranian ports, lifting sanctions on oil exports and stopping hostilities across regional fronts. Araqchi said acceptance could permit reopening within six days, followed by talks the next day. That timetable was conditional and represented Iran’s position. The negotiations also faced disagreement over sequencing. Washington wanted Iran’s nuclear programme addressed from the outset, while Tehran wanted initial talks to concentrate on reopening the w...

WHO Lead-Poisoning Prevention Week Puts Hidden Exposure in Focus

The fourteenth International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week began on October 18 with a focus on finding hidden exposure and stopping it at its source. The World Health Organization’s campaign, running through October 24, uses the theme “From Detection to Prevention”. The message reflects a practical problem: lead exposure may not be obvious, and it can come from several places. WHO says identifying where exposure occurs allows proven protective measures to follow. The campaign provides technical guidance, advocacy materials and an events platform for organisations working on prevention. WHO also urges governments and other stakeholders to establish and enforce rules eliminating lead paint. Awareness events are part of that effort, but the campaign’s emphasis extends to the products and environments that expose people in daily life. Why children face particular risks In its June 2026 fact sheet, WHO says no level of lead exposure is known to be free of harmful effects. The metal can aff...

Chennai Faces Fresh Rain Alert as Crews Clear Waterlogged Roads

Chennai faced a fresh warning of extremely heavy rain on October 18 while municipal crews worked to clear waterlogging left by the previous night’s downpour. The Regional Meteorological Centre issued a red alert for the 24 hours beginning Sunday afternoon, according to a PTI report carried by DT Next. The report recorded 36 centimetres at Parry’s Corner and 34 centimetres at Kathivakkam in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. These were readings at individual locations, rather than a uniform rainfall total across the city. Orange alerts also covered neighbouring Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, as well as Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni. The forecast meant that the clearance of earlier flooding did not remove the possibility of renewed disruption. Clearance work and relief The Greater Chennai Corporation said all 22 subways had been cleared and reopened by 6 a.m. It reported no casualties or major accidents and said nine relief centres had been established. Those statements descri...

Namo Bharat Nears Three Years With 4.5 Crore Passenger Journeys

Namo Bharat has recorded more than 4.5 crore passenger journeys since its October 2023 launch, the Union housing ministry said on October 18. The figure was announced as NCRTC marked the regional railway’s approaching third anniversary at an event in New Delhi on October 17. The operator reported daily use exceeding 1.1 lakh passengers and a recent single-day high of about 1.68 lakh. These are journey counts, rather than a count of distinct people who have used the service. Operations began on the 17-kilometre Sahibabad–Duhai Depot section. The full 82-kilometre Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut corridor, together with Meerut Metro, was dedicated on February 22, 2026. The anniversary therefore covers a service that expanded in stages, rather than three years of operation along the entire route. A railway designed for regional commuting NCRTC’s project overview describes Namo Bharat as a service for longer commuter trips, using fewer stops and higher speeds than an urban metro. Its dedicated align...
