India-Kerala: 8-yr-old infected with HIV virus; govt orders probe

Thiruvananthapuram:

A young life put in jeopardy, thanks to a blatant medical negligence. In Kerala, an eight-year-old girl's life is in danger, after she was given blood infected with HIV.

The child had undergone several blood transfusions at the Calicut Medical College and the district hospital in Wayanad as she is a Thalassemia patient. Neither of her parents are HIV positive.
The health department admits the blood may have come from a person who was in the window period of being HIV positive when it is difficult to detect the disease or faulty equipment could have prevented the HIV infected blood from being flagged.
