Doctor suspended for taking bribe to treat cancer patient

ROHTAK: In an indication of how low the medical ethics have fallen, the head of department of oncology, at the Pt Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post-Graduation Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak, was suspended on Saturday for allegedly stalling the treatment of a cancerpatient, after his relatives failed to cough up the second installment of the bribe he had demanded to treat the patient in the government hospital. The relatives blew the lid off the scam, irked, after the patient's condition deteriorated and he expired.

The university of health sciences which governs the PGIMS on Saturday suspended the senior professor and head of department (HoD), surgery, Dr RK Kadwasra on the basis of these complaints by the patients and their kin and also instituted a probe against him. The varsity set up a three member inquiry committee of senior doctors comprising medical superintendent Dr Ashok KumarChauhan, vigilance officer Dr RS Dahiya and dean Dr VK Jain.

A cancer patient Ramniwas Sihag from Sirsa, died at PGIMS during treatment on March 28 after which the deceased's kin alleged that the HoD had taken bribe and demanded more money for treatment and also alleged negligence by the hospital staff which resulted in his death.

Angered by his death, the family members created ruckus and alleged that negligence by doctors and nurses had resulted in his death. Naveen Sihag, son of the victim, also lodged a complaint with police and PGIMS authorities, alleging that the head of the department, Dr RK Kadwasra, had demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for the chemotherapy of his father during the treatment at previous occasions.

He said that he had paid Rs 55,000 for the treatment in three installments of Rs 20,000 twice and Rs 15,000 once for the three chemotherapy sessions. However, after third chemotherapy, his condition started deteriorating and we got him admitted in PGIMS on Tuesday.

The suspended doctor, who is a relative of the Chautalas, influential political family of Haryana, had faced similar charges from many patients at earlier occasions also but the authorities failed to take action against him due to political pressure. Sources within the institute said in last seven months four persons had lodged complaints against Dr Kadwasra accusing him of taking money for treatment of their patients.
