Fire Kills 73 In Johannesburg, Bodies Found "Stashed" Near Locked Gate

A fire that engulfed a five-storey building killed more than 70 people including children in central Johannesburg on Thursday, the South African city's emergency services said. Another 52 were injured, some suffering from smoke inhalation, and were taken for treatment at local hospitals, Emergency Management Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.

"We have now 73 fatalities and 52 people injured who were transported to various healthcare facilities for further medical care," Mulaudzi said.

At least seven children were among those killed by the flames, in what is on track to become one of the deadliest fires worldwide in recent years.

New Delhi, 1 October 2026. The Union government released its accounts for April to August 2026 on 30 September. Receipts had reached ₹13,67,709 crore, while spending was ₹20,77,958 crore. The difference shows why the monthly accounts matter, but it cannot by itself predict the full-year fiscal deficit. These are cumulative figures for the first five months of the 2026–27 financial year, not a final annual balance. Key points Receipts through August were 37.5% of the annual budget estimate. Expenditure was 38.9% of its annual budget estimate. Capital expenditure stood at ₹5,09,949 crore, while revenue expenditure was ₹15,68,009 crore. What the accounts show The Finance Ministry's monthly review breaks the ₹13,67,709 crore in receipts into ₹8,37,921 crore of net tax revenue, ₹4,54,549 crore of non-tax revenue and ₹75,239 crore of non-debt capital receipts.
