Santiniketan Added to UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023

Santiniketan in West Bengal was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 17 September 2023 during the extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. UNESCO described it as India’s 41st World Heritage Site at the time of inscription. The site is closely associated with poet, philosopher and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It developed from an ashram established by Tagore’s father, Debendranath Tagore, and later became the setting for Rabindranath Tagore’s experimental school and Visva-Bharati. Why Santiniketan is significant Santiniketan brought together education, art, architecture, landscape and ideas about international cultural exchange.
