ASEAN occupies prominent place in India’s Indo-Pacific initiative; important pillar of ‘Act East’ policy: PM Modi in Jakarta

 Immediately after the meetings, PM Modi will return to Delhi for the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10.

Speaking at the ASEAN-India Summit in Jakarta, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said ASEAN is a central pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Indo-Pacific initiative. The nation supports India-ASEAN centrality, he said in his address at the summit.

On the year’s theme of ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of growth’, PM Modi described ASEAN crucial role in global development and said: “21st century is Asia’s century.”

He also called for building a rules-based post-COVID world order and strengthening the voice of the Global South.

Emphasising the connect between ASEAN and India based on history and geography, Modi said there has been consistent progress in “our mutual cooperation” in spite of the atmosphere of global uncertainty.

PM Modi arrived in Indonesia Thursday morning to attend the ASEAN-India and the East Asia summits to “work with various leaders for making a better planet.”

Ahead of his departure from New Delhi, Modi said that the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the ASEAN has injected new dynamism into the group’s ties with New Delhi.

“Engagement with ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy,” Modi said in his departure statement. “I look forward to discussing with ASEAN leaders the future contours of our partnership, which has now entered its fourth decade. Engagement with ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership entered into last year has injected new dynamism in our ties,” he said.

The 20th ASEAN-India Summit is a “greatly cherished” partnership, he added in a post on X.

After the ASEAN-India Summit, the prime minister will attend the 18th East Asia Summit. It focuses on “important developmental sectors like healthcare, environment and digital innovations,” he said in a tweet on Wednesday.

“This forum provides a useful opportunity to deliberate on issues of importance to the region including food and energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation. I look forward to exchanging views with other EAS Leaders on practical cooperation measures to collectively address these global challenges,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi received an “unforgettable welcome” from the Indian community in Jakarta upon his arrival Thursday morning.

PM Modi has a packed schedule in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he reached early morning India time to attend the ASEAN-India meet and East Asia Summit. Immediately after the meetings, he will return to Delhi, where India is hosting the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10.

A day earlier External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also arrived in Jakarta Wednesday for the ASEAN-related meetings. He met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi to discuss G20 issues as well as bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
