Obama declares Boston bombings an act of terror

United States president Barack Obama has declared the Boston Marathon bombings an act of terror, as authorities pledge to go "to the ends of the Earth" to apprehend those responsible.
Mr Obama said the bombings were a "heinous and cowardly" act, and warned US citizens to remain vigilant.
However, the US president said authorities were still unaware as to the source of the attack, and whether the responsible party was a domestic or foreign threat.
Boston remains on a high security alert after yesterday's attack, with armed forces on the streets and police conducting bag searches on buses and trains.
The FBI said there are no new additional threats, but say agents continue to interview key witnesses.
FBI special agent Richard DesLauriers said the organisation has received "voluminous" tip-offs and the investigation will be "worldwide".
No suspects have been taken into custody, but there are reports police searched an apartment in the Boston suburb of Revere in the early hours of Tuesday morning (local time).
The death toll from the bombings remains at three, including an eight-year-old boy, but authorities now say the number of injured has risen to 176, with 16 of those people in a critical condition.
Police have quashed rumours that up to seven bombs had been found, confirming the only two devices present were those that detonated.
Authorities have appealed for help from the public, asking anyone with photos or footage of the blasts to supply evidence.
